5 Strategies to Help Your Employees Become Better Leaders

Career development isn’t solely the responsibility of individual employees, but also of the company that employs them.

Think about how you can help your staff members attend industry events and conferences. While networking, they can positively represent your company to the rest of your industry. Take note of staff members who go to networking events on their own time, as these folks tend to be prospective leaders.  

2) Mentorship  

Mentorship programs are not just helpful for new hires, but they are also a great cross-training tool for established staff members. Your mentorship or employee shadowing program should include inter-departmental aspects. Doing this leads to both greater organizational proficiency and team performance.  

This type of program prepares staff members for broader roles inside your company, including leadership roles.  

3) Support Employee Growth  

To keep staff members from getting stagnant, give them chances to grow in their current roles. Employees are a company’s most valuable asset, so it is critical to invest in them.  

Ways to support employee growth may include covering the cost of formal education or internal training sessions. You can support employees pursuing outside training by posting upcoming development events, including seminars and educational events.  

4) Maintain On-going Communication  

Continual communication at work is very important to employee development, but only 2 percent of employers supply ongoing feedback to their staff members, according to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  

Maintain communication in both regular formal meetings and informal check-ins. Meeting individually on a semi-annual or quarterly basis can help managers and employees identify areas for development. All interactions between managers and employees should have a comfortable atmosphere where employees feel free to voice their thoughts.  

5) Set a Good Example  

Managers should exemplify the leadership qualities that they would like to see staff members adopt, including transparency, trust, dedication, and respect.
